JEE MAIN RANK

JEE Main 2015 normalization and calculation of Class XII percentile post presents in depth analysis and review of the normalization process used by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for the Joint Entrance Examination 2015. This procedure is followed by the CBSE for calculating the Class XII percentile to determine the merit ranking in JEE Mains.
The All India Rank (AIR) of JEE Main form the basis of the admission to the undergraduate engineering programs in NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded and private universities/institutes.
Plancess explains the calculation of the percentile score of a student in this post. We hope this will help you understand the basis of the JEE Main Merit Rank derivation.

About Percentile and Normalization of Marks of Class 12th/Qualifying Examination

Candidates often get confused between percentage of marks and percentile. They consider both these terms as same. In reality, they are not.
The percentage of marks and percentile are totally different terms, hence the candidates should not get confused with both these terms.
What is Percentage?
Percentage is a number out of 100
What is Percentile Score?
Percentile score of a candidate in a board or JEE Main will reflect how many candidates have scored below that candidate in his/her respective board examination and JEE Main.
The formula for calculating the Percentile of a candidate is shown below:
100 X Number of candidates in the ‘group’ with aggregate marks less than the candidate
Total number of the candidates in the ’group’
Let’s take an example for calculating the percentile score of a candidate in a particular board:
Assume,
No. of candidates registered for the examination = 13918
No. of candidates appear for the examination = 13711
a)     A candidate who has scored 50% marks in the board and 2218 candidates have scored below him, so his percentile score will be calculated as under:
Percentile score for 50% marks in the board = 2218 x 10013711    = 16.18
b)     A candidate who has scored 60% marks in the board and 6865 candidates have scored below her, the candidate’s percentile score will be calculated as below:
Percentile score for 60% marks in the board =6865 x 10013711    = 50.07
With this example, one thing is clear that percentage of marks scored (50% or 60%) by a candidate is different from the percentile score (16.18 or 50.07).
  • The normalization examination marks depends on the position of the candidate in his/her respective board. The percentile score a candidate gets in his/her board examination will add to his/her normalized marks.
  • It is important to note, candidates appearing for improvement exam to enhance their score in the qualifying examination, need to give exam for all five (5) subjects.
  • In the percentile system, the total marks obtained in all five subjects shown on the marksheet will be required for JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The marks from two different years in the marksheet CANNOT be considered for percentile calculation.
  • The weightage or normalized marks in qualifying examination is only for deciding JEE Main AIR, which will be used for admission to all IIITs, NITs and CFTIs, except IITs.
  • Aspirants who are appearing for improvement exam will get only ONE chance to inform JEE Main unit as to which year qualifying examination marks to be considered for the purpose of AIR declaration.

What will be considered for calculating the percentile score?

The percentile and normalized marks will be calculated take into consideration the five subjects.
  • Language,
  • Physics,
  • Mathematics,
  • Any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject),
  • Any other subject
Important Note: If a candidate has appeared in six subjects in the qualifying examination, the subject (fifth or sixth) with better marks will be taken into consideration.
In our next post, we will discuss about normalization process in detail. Stay posted!
